Alcoholism and Drug Addiction - Getting out of Your Own Way

By C-P Lehmann

I have mentioned this often previously - before healing or progress can be made when fighting an illness like drug addiction or alcoholism, is knowing and understanding what you're up against.

Because once you understand something - in this case the nature of addiction - you can let go of all your preconceptions that keep you stuck and prevent you from moving forward.

Having predetermined and inflexible ideas about a subject, as many do with regards alcohol and drug addiction, just means we make it make it far more difficult for ourselves in trying to beat an addiction (or help someone else with theirs).

So step number one needs to be you getting out of your own way, getting the information/knowledge you need - and then moving forward from there to start your journey of healing and recovery.

The need to be right is an issue for many of us. Being open-minded can be difficult. Sometimes there is nothing wrong with that - but when dealing with potentially life and death subjects like drug and alcohol addiction, you can't afford to do that.

When it comes to understanding the nature of alcoholism and drug addiction, a particularly contentious issue is the addiction/alcoholism as a disease argument. At the end of the day, whether or not you agree with this line of reasoning, should make little difference to you doing everything you can to fight your own or help someone else fight their addiction.

Agreeing on the causes of alcoholism and addiction can also sometimes be a contentious issue. Science now shows that genetics plays an increasingly prominent role, but lots of people still don't believe it despite evidence to the contrary.

If you would like to read more detailed information around any of these issues, don't hesitate to visit my website by following the links provided. But remember, ultimately the most important thing is to do whatever is necessary to beat your (or someone you care about) alcoholism or drug addiction. - 15683
