The Secret Truth of Body Cleansing

By Johanna Williams

Millions of people want to lose weight, and everyone wants to find the easiest, fastest way to do so with the least amount of work. The latest scheme for this is known as 'body cleansing', or a 'cleansing diet'. They pull you in with seductive claims of how being fat is not your fault, and if you just take a few little pills you'll be completely fixed and never have to worry about being fat again.

The truth of the matter, is that this is plain out not right. For a specific example, there's a product recently that claims they can get rid of obesity by removing the "dangerous worm" called Paragonimus Westermani. They have some horrible pictures of the worm, and of what it does to you, but fail to leave out one important little fact... the only way it can get into you, is if you eat freshwater crabs. Live. When was the last time you ate a live crab? It's not the sort of thing I do, and certainly not something I would do every few weeks, yet these people seem to think that this raw crab eating is common.

Unfortunately for the people who are convinced by their claims, the weight loss programs they suggest usually do more harm then good. If you follow their instructions and get rid of all the bacteria in your gut, your body becomes extremely susceptible to damage, disease, even to death, as it is no longer protected by its natural defenses.

Imagine your body is a castle, and the good bacteria are an army put in place to keep you safe from the bad bacteria outside of you. In return for using a small amount of the food you eat, they guard you from hundreds and thousands of deadly enemies that you can't even see.

As a matter of fact, one of the 'cleansing' sites I looked at gave a picture of what they said were plaque spots on your colon. It would have been terribly convincing, except that they left on the little tag in the corner of the picture, which identified it as an image of candidiasis. Candidiasis happens to be a potentially deadly disease, which is caused by.... lack of bacteria.

Now, maybe it's just me, but using a picture of a disease caused by having no bacteria, to try and get you to remove your bacteria, struck me as terribly silly. This person, I thought to myself, obviously doesn't care about checking their sources or giving good information. Why should I place my health in the hands of someone like that? Why should you?

It's all down to you, of course, but I would rather keep to dieting then risk myself on a new scheme that probably won't work, and could even seriously hurt me. Dieting is hard, and takes a lot of effort, but even if I wasn't willing to try I would prefer to be fat then to be dead.

Granted, some of the products on offer aren't complete scams - the sellers really believe what they're offering. Problem is, that's just because they don't know any better, not because the product actually works. If you really want to lose weight, talk to your doctor, don't just jump on the next bandwagon to crazy town. - 15683
