By Sanjib Sarkar

Sunscreen is used by quite a few people to help avoid sun burn and skin cancer. However, if you do not have the correct sunscreen, it will not protect your skin from sun burn or skin cancer. Using these tips, you can avoid sunburn and protect yourself against skin caner.

Tip #1 Use Sun Block With A SPF Of 30 Or Higher

SPF 30 provides a defense from sun burn and skin cancer. It takes 300 minutes to get sunburned with SPF 30 assuming your skin gets burned in 10 minutes of sunlight. SPF 15 will offer sun protection for 150 minutes

Tip #2 Use Sunblock That Offer Broad Spectrum Protection

Sunblock with broad spectrum protection provides a defense against UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays exist even if there is no sun out. These rays may potential cause skin cancer. UVB rays exist when the sun comes out. These rays can cause sun burn and skin cancer if the skin is left unprotected.

Tip #3 Sunbock Needs To Be Applied Frequently To Offer Proper Protection

Sunblock is made less effective over time in water. This even happens to water proof sunblock. Apply sunblock liberally and often if you are close to water. Once time per hour should be the minimum. Use the sunblock day after day.

Tip #4 Apply sunblock while resting in the shade or away from the sun.

This is because UVA rays are present even when there is no direct sun light.

Tip #5 Oxybenzone should not be in your sunscreen.

Oxybenzone is a hazardous ingredient in many sunscreens. This ingrident has shown possible links to skin cancer. Sunscreens that contain Zinc Oxide or Titanium Oxide should be chosen instead.

Tip #6 Buy New Sun Screen Every Year

Most sunscreens do not achieve the same level of sun protection after one year of time. The sunblock loses its strength over a period of time.

Tip #7 Get Some Rest At Noon

Midday or peak sun is also a good time to get out of the sun and take a break indoors. The sun is strongest at this point. The sun is strongest between 12:00PM and 3:00PM.

Tip #8 Wear Sun Glasses, Hats And Tight Shirts

Wear UV sunglasses to protect your eyes, hat to protect your scalp and tight shirt to protect your body from the sun.

Tip #9 Be Extra Careful When Going To The Beach

Sun block may need to be reapplied more frequently since the sand and the water reflect the sun creating a stronger UVB ray. Higher altitudes also gives the sun more intensity.

Tip #10 Water Should Be Consumed Frequently
