Online Shopping Tips: Buying Shoes for Your Children

By Katie Wilber

Shoes glorious shoes! Buying shoes for children can be compared to putting a kid in a candy store. There are so many adorable pairs, how can a person decide?

With no heavy bags to schlep around, online shoe shopping is tons of fun. However, online shoe shopping also presents some issues. Namely, will the shoes fit, will they be made of quality materials - little kids can be so hard on shoes. Also, will your transaction be secure?

Here are a few online shoe buying tips to make sure your online shoe shopping experience is everything it should be - pleasant, practical, and safe.

Take Advice From the Experts - The Better Business Bureau

Is the site you're shopping at secure? Unsure? Take a look at the URL if it begins with the following letters, HTTPS, then you can know you're shopping at a secure site. The S stands for secure.

If a site asks you to register, protect your password and make it unique from all your other online passwords to ensure sure your personal information isn't stolen.

Check the store's privacy statement. Make sure your information isn't sold or rented to outside parties.

Are the shipping and return policies apparent and fair? Store policies should be easily accessible and readily available to anyone interested. If you cannot find the stores shipping and return policies get them in writing before you place an order.

Keep accurate records and receipts. If an item arrives damaged or you need to return it, it's important to be able to quickly access your receipt.

Research the Retailer

Many review sites, magazines, search engines and even blogs post reviews. Using your search engine of choice, look for reviews and feedback for your particular children's shoe store.

Become aware of the brands the store carries. Are they good brands or designers with a good reputation? Does it hold true to sizing charts or do items tend to run large or small?

Accurate and Descriptive Information

It's delightful when a retailer provides a wealth of information about the shoes, the materials, care information and even where they are made.

Photos make the shopping process complete and a retailer who understands how important a good photo(s) is, appreciates their customers and their time.

What Size Does Your Child Really Wear?

While children's shoe sizes tend to run fairly consistently across the board, it's important to know their measurements too.

That being said, make sure you're buying shoes in the right sizing standard. Shoes can be sized as U.S., U.K., European, Mexico, Japan and even U.K. Australia. They can be measured in inches, millimeters, and centimeters.

If you know your child's shoe size in U.S. sizes, but the shoes you're looking at online are listed in European sizes you can often find conversion charts online.

If you're uncertain about how your child's shoe size translates to the brand and make of the shoes you're looking at, order a half to a whole size larger. That way they at least have room to grow.

Online shoe shopping can be a tremendous time saver and a whole lot of fun, provided you take a few minutes to protect yourself. Make sure you know your child's shoe sizes, and how they convert, and make sure you're shopping with a responsible retailer. - 15683
