Top 10 Holiday Eating Tips That Will Help You Burn Calories

By Dorthy Weatherbush

The season is upon us again, tis the season to overeat. Seems like no matter how hard you try, overeating during the holidays is as much a part of things as gifts and decorations. Make it different this year by following the few tips listed below, beginning with number ten and working our way to number one!

10) The simplest thing that you can do this holiday season to curb your overeating is to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water daily and especially before that holiday get together. You will feel fuller faster and be less likely to overindulge.

9) Rather than starve yourself all day long to save room for every holiday treat you know you shouldn't have, why not chow down on a couple of pieces of fruit first before arriving at the party. This way you are not as hungry and you've also eaten healthy for the day so you don't have to feel guilty after the holiday gathering.

8) Watch you portions, a healthy amount is about the size of your fist. For the holidays, trim that to a slightly smaller portion.

7) Never miss a meal. I realize this may sound strange but it is so true. Many people think they are doing themselves a favor by skipping lunch or breakfast because they feel they are saving room for the big dinner party that night. This is so far from the truth it is not even funny. Keep your daily routine and consider a doggie bag if you are too full by party time.

6) Change the recipe. Rather than giving up the foods you love, why not make the foods you love healthy. Did you know that by shifting one ingredient for a healthier one, you can take a formally unhealthy dish and turn it into a healthy alternative?

5) Add more physical activity to your holiday routine. Parties and dinners are fun events during this time of the year but when you can add some ice-skating, sledding, or a walk with friends to the mix.

4) Stick to your normal workout schedule. Many times, during the holidays, we feel like there is just not enough time and the workout is easiest to skip. Don't skip it!

3) Take a strategy to dinner with you and not just an appetite. It is not too reasonable to believe that you can attend these holiday gatherings and not eat anything you like. With that in mind, why not develop a strategy beforehand of exactly what you will eat and how much of it you'll eat. As an example, if fruit cake is your adversary, why not have a piece but turn down the pumpkin pie.

2) Burn fat by building muscle. The quickest way to destroy fat is by building muscle yet many of us refuse to do any "heavy lifting" during this time of year. Sure you could opt for some over priced personal trainer but why not just give that holiday turkey a lift.

1) Take a chill pill. This can be one of the most stressful times of year and if you are not careful, you can get so caught up in helping everyone else that you really forget to take care of yourself. Relax and have peace knowing that everything will get done just not by you.

These are the top ten holiday eating tips that will help you burn more calories. Take a few or all of them and put them to work in your life this holiday season. Who knows maybe you will not need that New Year's resolution to lose weight after all. - 15683
